Monroe County Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council

Purpose

The Older Americans Act of 1965 requires that each Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to have an advisory council.  The council’s purpose is to serve in an advisory capacity to the Department of Aging and Disabilities.  The Advisory Council will further the agency’s mission of developing and coordinating community-bases systems of services for all older adults in Monroe County.

Duties of the Advisory Council

The role of an Advisory Council Member is to represent the interests and needs of the older adult community here in Monroe County. More specifically, the Advisory Council communicates these needs to the Area Agency on Aging and assists to develop ideas and solutions to the challenges being faced by older adults in our community. From advocacy to strategic planning, the role of an Advisory Council Member can be challenging, fulfilling, and a great opportunity to serve the older adult population right here in our own community.

Membership

Membership on the Advisory Council is open to Monroe County residents. At least fifty percent of Advisory Council Members must be age sixty or older. Every effort is made to have Advisory Council Membership reflect the makeup of our community. Members are appointed by the Monroe County Commissioners to three-year terms. Meetings are monthly, March through December, at the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging office.
